SHORT-TERM MISSIONS

Czech Republic: The first STM team of 2007 has just returned from a 10-day mission in Most, in the north west region of Czech Republic. The team was from Asheville, North Carolina, USA. By all accounts they’ve had an amazing time. I spoke with the team leader last week, and am looking forward to his post-mission report. Of course, once I have some photos and testimonies, I’ll pass them on to you.

The team were invited to local schools to help teach English. By his own admission, the team leader hadn’t thought this venture would bear much fruit, but he faithfully prepared for the lessons. But, as my own experience testifies, schools-work can be very effective even if you can’t openly share the Gospel. Once you make a connection with the local kids, they’ll follow you round for the rest of the mission – like the Pied Piper on mission! You can then invite them to evening ‘outreach’ events. Another bonus is that the local Pastor will often be asked back to the school when the team have left. A great opportunity for godly influence in the local community.

Slovakia: As we speak, 21 people are coming to the end of their mission in Brezno, Slovakia. The photo below shows the Church Planters in Brezno (Peter and Lucia) receiving prayer ministry at the project launch in 2006. The STM team is from Kingswinford, West Midlands. Last year there were 15 on the team, so I dread to think how many will go next year. Having such a large team does present some logistical problems, (can you imagine 21 people trying to get on a bus together?) but these are small potatoes compared to the positive impact the team are having in Brezno. Most days week the team have been splitting into two groups: one group going into schools, and the others working with the local authority to tidy up a community area. They’ve certainly had better weather than we have in England!

On Saturday 2nd June NLI has a Prayer Mission team heading out to Slovakia. Life Church Burnley has four representatives on the team. (Thanks guys: I’m proud of you!) The team of 12 will be visiting all the Church Plants – praying for the Pastors, prayer-walking, and leading 2 seminars on prayer and intercession. This is the first year that the Prayer Missions have been coordinated by the STM department – well, me actually. I’m encouraged and excited at what has been accomplished so far, especially having 12 on the Slovakia team.

Romania: Kevin Westfield, the STM Team Leader, has just returned from an exploratory trip to Romania. He took around 16 Pastors and Leaders from Canada, USA, England, and Scotland to visit some of the Church Plants and Mother churches connected to the NLI project, which begins this year. I hope to have some testimonies and photos soon, but let me whet your appetite. A couple of the Pastors witnessed amazing miracles – limbs growing, cysts disappearing, and joints realigning. I’m going out to Romania in September on a Prayer Mission, and am incredibly excited at the prospect. If you want to be part of this adventure please get in touch. The mission is from 8th to 15th September, and we’ll be traveling round to as many of the Church Plants as we can.

Ok, that’s all the current missions news for now. Please continue to pray for the teams heading out to Europe over the summer months and for the NLI STM Team as we begin to recruit teams for 2008. Our goal of 40 teams certainly means we have our work cut out.

They Walk Among Us!

If you want a laugh, check these out…

Some guy bought a new fridge for his house. To get rid of his old fridge, he put it in his front garden and hung a sign on it saying, ‘Free to good home. You want it, you take it.’ For three days the fridge sat there without even one person looking twice at it. He eventually decided that people were too un-trusting of this deal. It looked too good to be true, so he changed the sign to read, ‘Fridge for sale, $50′. The next day someone stole it.

One day I was walking down the beach with some friends when someone shouted….”Look at that dead bird!” Someone looked up at the sky and said…”where???”

While looking at a house, my brother asked the real estate agent which direction was north bcause, he explained, he didn’t want the sun waking him up every morning. She asked, “Does the sun rise in the north?” When my brother explained that the sun rises in the east, and has for sometime, she shook her head and said, “Oh, I don’t keep up with that stuff.”

I used to work in technical support for a 24/7 call centre. One day I got a call from an individual who asked what hours the call centre was open. I told him, “The number you dialled is open 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.” He responded, “Is that Eastern or Pacific time?” Wanting to end the call quickly, I said, “Uh, Pacific”.

My colleague and I were eating our lunch in our cafeteria, when we overheard one of the administrative assistants talking about the sunburn she got on her weekend drive to the shore She drove down in a convertible, but “didn’t think she’d get sunburned because the car was moving”.

My sister has a lifesaving tool in her car it’s designed to cut through a seat belt if she gets trapped. She keeps it in the trunk.

My friends and I were on a Pepsi run and noticed that the cases were discounted 10%. Since it was a big party, we bought 2 cases. The cashier multiplied 2 times 10% and gave us a 20% discount.

I was hanging out with a friend when we saw a woman with a nose ring attached to an earring by a chain. My friend said, “Wouldn’t the chain rip out every time she turned her head?” I had to explain that a person’s nose and ear remain the same distance apart no matter which way the head is turned.

I couldn’t find my luggage at the airport baggage area. So I went to the lost luggage office and told the woman there that my bags had never showed up. She smiled and told me not to worry because she was a trained professional and I was in good hands. “Now,” she asked me, “Has your plane arrived yet?”.

While working at a pizza parlour I observed a man ordering a small pizza to go. He appeared to be alone and the cook asked him if he would like it cut into 4 pieces or 6. He thought about it for some time before responding. “Just cut it into 4 pieces; I don’t think I’m hungry enough to eat 6 pieces!”

Trip to London Hillsong

On Sunday 27th May 2007, as part of their ‘education’, I took our three Interns to Hillsong Church, London. The fifth member of our group was Mark, from the worship team at King’s.

Home! That’s exactly how I felt when I walked into the Dominion Theatre, current home for Hillsong London. Having spent three very happy years immersed in Hillsong culture I was totally at home with the ‘professional’ lighting, visual images, music, and production. I can see why people are uncomfortable with this way of doing church, but it’s clear from the 2,000 people packing the theatre, worshiping God, that a lot of people feel totally at home here.

There are three services across the day. The set-up team has to arrive at 0400 to ensure all is ready for the first service at 1100. Now that’s commitment! The worship time was amazing and I found it so easy to enter God’s presence, especially when we sang ‘Hosanna’. If you haven’t heard this song on the latest Hillsong United CD then you must – it’s awesome. We also sang a heart-wrending version of Amazing Grace – who says old hymns aren’t relevant?

Mal Fletcher was preaching at the 1100 service. He spoke about the different generations, mainly the ‘Millenials’, who are ideally placed to impact their generation with Kingdom culture. (Millenials is a term used for those born between 1982 and 2000: for more information check out http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Generation_Y)

The church is teaming with ‘trendy’ 20 and 30-somethings, but there is no doubt in my mind that if you can reach this generation with the life-changing message of Christ then there is great hope for the future. London is the capital of our nation, so if you can impact London, you can impact England.

Me, Mark, Matt, Lily-Mae, and Erica

After church and lunch we headed to the British Museum. It was a nasty damp day, so this was the best (and closest) place to shelter. We rounded off our trip with a visit to Starbucks where Erica took this ‘damming’ photo. All is not as it seems!!
